Overview of an Altair® AI Edge™ Device
The Altair® AI Edge™ device is a single-board-computer (SBP) with an integrated camera, enclosed in a compact, industrial, all-aluminum enclosure.

Hardware
Single-Board Computer (SBP)
The SBP is a Raspberry Pi 4 Model B, powered by a Broadcom BCM2711, Quad core Cortex-A72 (ARM v8) 64-bit SoC with 8GB of RAM, and 128GB of storage via an on-board, industrial microSD card. Due to the way we partition it, the available space to the user is approx 50GB.
I/O and Power
The device only has one externally-exposed connector: a standard RJ45 Ethernet jack that requires both network connectivity and power via Power-over-Ethernet (PoE).
Camera
The camera is Raspberry Pi Camera Module 3, powered by a Sony IMX708 Quad Bayer sensor that provides up to 12MP with either auto-focus or fixed lens focusing for amazing imagery.
Enclosure
Altair® AI Edge™ has an all-aluminum enclosure designed in-house by Altair Engineering at its global headquarters in Troy, Michigan. It is designed to resist dust and moisture, and allows installation via one of five standard 3/8-16 ("tripod thread") sockets to make it easy to install in a variety of applications.
Note: Although the enclosure is designed to resist dust and moisture, it is not a sealed device. Altair® AI Edge™ devices should be visually inspected periodically to ensure relative cleanliness and low moisture.
Label and Serial Number
The serial number (S/N) is printed on the label on the back of the device. It is also the device's pre-assigned MAC address.
Software
OS
Altair® AI Edge™ devices run Raspberry Pi OS (previously called Raspbian) - a Linux-based operating system.
Device Drivers
Altair® AI Edge™ devices come pre-installed with the default Raspberry Pi V4L2 camera driver.
Altair IoT Studio ECP
Altair® AI Edge™ devices are managed by Altair® IoT Studio™ and run the Edge Compute Platform (ECP), a kubernetes-based architecture running k3s on the device.
Altair RapidMiner Real-Time Scoring
The computation on Altair® AI Edge™ devices is handled by an Altair RapidMiner Real-Time Scoring engine. It is exactly the same headless engine that runs Web API endpoints on an AI Hub. It is deployed as a container inside the device, managed by ECP.
